Live Cinema: Royal Shakespeare Company's "The Tempest"

Press Release: Live Cinema – “The Tempest” – March 22

March 14, 2017 – Gesa Power House Theatre will launch a new Live Cinema series featuring current productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Ballet, and Royal Opera. Direct from England, these productions are filmed live and rebroadcast internationally to select screens.

First up is the Royal Shakespeare Company production of “The Tempest” starring Simon Russell Beale. This high-tech production of one of Shakespeare’s most magic-filled plays is created in collaboration with Intel and in association with The Imaginarium Studios.

“The Power House is the only theater within a 200-mile radius to be screening these current, professional productions,” says Mark Anderson, one of the owners of the theater. “We have also upgraded the theater’s projector, and I think people will be very impressed with the image quality.”

About the “The Tempest”:
On a distant island a man waits. Robbed of his position, power and wealth, his enemies have left him in isolation. But this is no ordinary man, and this no ordinary island. Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical storm he wrecks the ship and washes his enemies up on the shore. When they wake, they find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems.

“The Tempest” runs about 2 hours 45 minutes, including one intermission. Beer, wine, and popcorn will be available for purchase.

The new Live Cinema series will begin at 6:00 p.m. due to the longer runtime of many of the productions.

Reserved seating tickets ($15 Adults, $10 Students) are available online (www.phtww.com ) or by calling the box office at 509-529-6500.

About the Gesa Power House Theatre

The historic Gesa Power House Theatre is a world-class, 300-seat performing arts venue, located in downtown Walla Walla. The 120-year-old building was once the Walla Walla Gas Plant, built to produce coal gas used to light the streets, businesses, and homes of Walla Walla. In 2011 the Gesa Power House Theatre building was transformed into a state-of-the-art playhouse for live performance. The interior design of the theatre was inspired by Shakespeare’s own intimate Blackfriars Theatre in London, England.

The Gesa Power House Theatre is on the Washington State Building Preservation Commission list of State historic buildings and on the National Register of Historic Places. The venue also hosts a variety of other cultural events, musical concerts, and private events (including weddings).
